Levana Taylor Any December Songs? (217* d) RE: Any December Songs? 16 Nov 21

The various broadside ballads about naval combats against Turkish vessels ("The Royal Oak," "The Turkish Man-of-War," "Captain Mansfield's Fight," etc. etc.) are often supposed to have been inspired by an action on December 9, 1669, in which an English squadron under Admiral Kempthorne defeated nine Algerian ships. However, this thread points out that the 1669 battle may be the best known but not the only one, and that few or no specific details in the ballads link them to Kempthorne. (And when they give some date, it is not in December.)
