meself Who is 'Monsieur Polinice'? (2) Who is 'Monsieur Polinice'? 21 Nov 21

In the second sentence of an essay on his research in Haiti (part of a book linked to on this site somewhere, I believe), Alan Lomax writes, "Let Monsieur Polinice limp along under the baggage!" Is this a reference that anyone with a smidgeon of education should recognize - or is 'Polinice' simply to be taken as a common or characteristic Haitian name? Anyone know?
