Guess the painting by Laura Cumming in The Observer 26/12/2021 Last week's detail showed the angel from The Dream of St Joseph by Philip de Champaigne (c1642). According to St Matthew's Gospel, Joseph has pledged to marry Mary when he suddenly learns that she is pregnant. Shocked, he has no idea what to do. But God sends this rather brawny angel to him in a think-bubble dream to explain the divine conception and instruct him to call the baby Jesus. Joseph's story is rarely depicted and Champaigne has imagined his dilemma with great empathy. The angel speaks without words, just like a figure in a dream, explaining the mystery through sign language. No words or music, I'm afraid, but there is the plot for a song.
