So, the long and the short of it is that the rail cuts were down to Labour. Heath wanted to renew the cuts - but didn't Thatcher wanted to do more, but didn't. It seems that including details of those two is just a smokescreen to hide the fact that Labour did the cuts! Which is probably not what was meant by Backwoodsman's comment: Couldn’t agree more, Dave. The biggest mistake this country ever made was the destruction of the majority of the rail network. And we all know whose handiwork that was, don’t we?
