My porridge trick when I was working: it was a half hour drive to work, leaving home at 6.15 am so I put real porridge oats - not quick oats - in a leakproof/heatproof container with a bit of milk, add a few unsweetened cranberries or prunes and boiling water to fill the container about three quarters full. By the time I got to work it was just right, add some more boiling water to bring the temperature back up and eat it. Lovely! Mackerel oil and peas with porridge? Horseradish sauce and smoked salmon? What-the?? You crazy Poms! LOL But, I use oats or red lentils to thicken stews.
