While hearing the cuckoo's call was a sign of good fortune, beckoning the end of winter and entrance of spring, seeing the cuckoo was said to perpetuate one's current circumstances throughout the year. This was the case regardless of whether one's wealth and resources were waxing or waning. Whatever the conditions, these aspects of their life would continue for twelve months.
