Steve: What does race have to do the etymology? Speaking just of Nordhoff, it is Nordhoff doing the writing. It is fiction. The only thing we really know for certain is that he learned of the word some time before he first went to print. We don't even know that Nordhoff ever heard the word spoken aloud in any accent. He may very well have read it somewhere.
