Purely coincidentally, I was listening to a live Doc Watson/Bill Monroe concert recently, and Doc mentioned the song was created from a combination of stories from Driftwood's grandfather. I couldn't easily identify a grandfather online, but Driftwood's parents were Allie "Ollie" Alena Morris (born Risner) and Neal Hamilton Morris -- perhaps one of them have a Fud/Bud/etc relative.
