Yes, early CDR drives worked like that. They had a 4-wire connector in addtion to the IDE ribbon cable which took the audio to the sound card. I still have one - but it works (in Linux) without that cable - and has no headphone socket.

I don't think SATA CD/DVD drives ever had that connector.
