History comes alive in the New Haven Palladium (Feb. 8, 1864): “A happy, merry band of students went tramping down Chapel street, keeping time as they went, to the popular air of ‘When Johnny comes marching home,’ which was rendered in excellent spirit and harmony. An equally jolly group of soldiers, out on pass, and having had their bitters, were vainly endeavoring to make regular head way with the old air ‘Landlord fill the flowing bowl.’” (Presumably Yale students.)
