Indianapolis Star (Jan. 31, 1908): "Forty black-faced Indianapolis comedians will entertain at the Marion Club this evening....The following is the program:...song by Tad Shideler, 'Big Rock Candy Mountain.'" Farmer and Mechanic (Raleigh, N.C.) (Sept. 8, 1908): "Lemonade springs where the bluebird sing on the big rock-candy mountain." So by the end of 1908 the song was known in both the Midwest and the Southeast.
