6 November On this day in 1917, the third battle of Ypres ended when British and Canadian troops captured Passchendaele Ridge. The high ground of Hill 60, south of Zillebeke, was created in the 1850s by spoil dumped from the cutting for the railway line between Ypres and Comines. At 3:10 a.m. on 7 June 1917, 990,000 pounds (450,000 kg) of explosives went off under the German positions, demolishing a large part of Hill 60 and killing c.?10,000 German soldiers between Ypres and Ploegsteert.
