Eric says Orkney is nearby (maybe he lives in the north of Scotland) but would his dialysis requirements be accommodated in a trip to Orkney? I had a short visit there once and even just on the main island there are an amazing amount of archaeological sites to visit. I was fortunate that the Ness of Brodgar dig was on during my visit. I didn't come across any folk and traditional music scene though I know of a few musicians from the Orkney Islands - the Wrigley Sisters come to mind immediately - and there is an annual folk festival. The island geography is more lush than I expected.
