At https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GN_5yMY42wo you will find a good history of "O'Donnell Abu" which gives detailed credit to the 1843 song's author Michael Joseph McCann, the song's banning as "seditious", the definance of those who sang it despite the ban, and a performance by Eugene Dunphy, It is obvious that Job Maarse, who rewrote the lyrics of "O'Donnell ABu" into "Washington Square" was hewing closely to the original, which makes his parody even cleverer in retrospect.
