To me, it makes more obvious sense if it is the man saying he gave the diamond ring, and the woman replying, 'But the vows you made', etc. Thus "own" (i.e., "admit"; not "owned") - he admits that he made a commitment to her, implying that he has not treated her well, which she expands on. And, again, the last verse added by, presumably, a homesick soldier; the poetic and allegorical interpretations of that verse seem quite a stretch to this simple mind. |
