Why 're-write' the song, when it makes perfect sense if the verse in question is just interpreted as a back-and-forth between the two - i.e., he speaks the first two lines, she speaks the last two? I suppose it's possible, btw, that there were originally two separate verses there that became conflated, with a couple of lines from each verse lost.
