Dave, as I understand it the problem with the beach was the steep track down had eroded dangerously. The similar one we looked at could also be dangerous if you weren't fit and careful and was also apparently on his hit list. The locals felt warning signs would be enough "at own risk" etc. SRS no, we just passed through Athens. Our taxi driver took us the scenic coast road to the airport. We were appalled at the enormous building projects to cover the whole of that coast with luxury apartments and resorts for the rich and their yachts. Last year you could see the sea most of the way, now just hoardings, cranes and piles of earth.
