My father used to go to pubs where there was the Traditional (ubiquitous) piano and the night would evolve into one of the regulars singing along to someone plonking out a tune. He often led the singing and had many a drink given for his performances. He also made a half guinea or two singing at dances on a Saturday night. Surely this is a tradition that has morphed into what we enjoy now.
