I'm thinking I learned this from a recording by Peggy Seeger, way back when. Here's how I remember her verses:

Pretty Saro

I come to this country in 1809,
I found many a true lover, but I never found mine;
I looked all around me and found myself lone;
Always the stranger, and a long way from home.

My love she won't have me so I understand;
She wants a free-holder, and I have no land;
I cannot maintain her on silver and gold,
Or buy all the fine things my love's house must hold.

I wish I was a merchant and could write a fine hand;
I 'd write my love a letter so she'd understand;.
I'd write of the mountains where the waters ov'rflow,
And I'd think of Pretty Saro wherever I go.

Cheerily,
Charlie Ipcar
