I have 2 Martins - not cheap ones - plus a couple of boutique luthier specials, as well as the odd cheaper production guitar. I can assure you that none of them are adversely affected by the string snapping method. And if a string breaks on tuning back up to pitch, it was probably due to break anyway and you know that they are then due for a change anyway. Just my 2 cents worth of course...
