While orangutans can learn to associate plastic letter symbols with objects and actions, they do not possess the capacity to "read" in the human sense of understanding the meaning of written language. Words go right over their head. Studies have shown they can be trained to distinguish symbols and even follow sequences of symbols to obtain rewards, but this is more about recognizing specific visual patterns rather than comprehending the meaning of words or sentences. But words alone don’t equal human speech. Languages have grammar and syntax, which some believe may even be hardwired into the human brain. If other primates are born with this special skill, nobody has seen evidence of it yet.

In a world of spectrums, some primates may be thrown forward and some humans are throwbacks. ;^/
