cnd Gospel Songs with Sports Metaphors (17) RE: Gospel Songs with Sports Metaphors 19 May 25

Yet another imperfect match... Ain't No Instant Replay by Mitch Greenhill. Most of the below is my transcription of the song, except the final stanza [in brackets] which comes from a c. 1970 "Barry Oliver Folk Guitar" workshop leaflet. The theme is remniscient of the old Nitty Gritty Dirt Band song, Video Tape, which despite my penchant for tangents so far is not germane enough to include.

Ain't No Instant Replay (In The Football Game Of Life)

Sitting by my TV set on Sunday afternoon
I wonder does a linebacker commit himself too soon?
The instant replay shows me, was I wrong or was I right?
But there ain't no instant replay in the football game of life

CHORUS
Ain't no instant replay when your baby says goodbye
There ain't no instant replay, you have to wonder why
You can't see it over on your TV set tonight
Ain't no instant replay in the football game of life

Instant replay shows you just where the play went wrong
Why'd that quarterback eat the ball? He held it a bit too long
And was their strong-side safety interference1 on that pass?
But in the football game of life, you'll see it once and it's past

CHORUS

To the goal I'm running on my life's football field
Though often offside penalties they've called and I've appealed
But wouldn't it be better to have found out what went wrong
From an isolated camera station near my own end zone

CHORUS

[Oh many's been the moment I would like to see again
Many's been the missing of a lover or a friend
And many's been the memories, heavy's been the pain
Lookin' for the replay in my life's own football game]
