GUEST,Ellie P. Lyr Req: Mah Lindy Lou (Lily Strickland, 1920) (20) RE: Lyr Req: Mah Lindy Lou (Lily Strickland, 1920) 10 Aug 25

Wow! I’m here thanks to Google! I’ve loved “Lindy Lou” since my mother used to sing it to me when I was a small child, so that would’ve been around 1948-49.

I’m surprised to hear that the bird was actually written as “mockingbird”; I remember it as “nightingale..”

I have always felt that the song was sung by a field slave (in the Southern US circa 1800-1850) who was in love (from afar) with Lindy Lou who was a “house slave.” I even thought that maybe the song was from the musical, “Porgy and Bess.” But I guess I’m wrong about that.
