Some excellent points made above and I will concede that some songs can hold their own with regards multiple verses. However, only if the verses have NO FAT and they tell a good story.

My biggest cringe is for songs written around a countdown or count-up.
e.g. Ten Green Bottles, 12 Days Of Christmas, One Man Went To Mow, The Bog Down In The Valley-o, etc.
