When I was about seven I found I could knock out a few tunes on a cheap harmonica purchased at the local market. My dad heard me playing God Save The Queen so he bought me a Hohner chromatic. I never had any tuition, but I could tootle along with most simple tunes without worrying which hole I was playing. I still don't understand how I do that. I can read music but nowhere near fast enough to play from notation, and I'm actually quite glad about that. Everything is by ear. Over the last sixty years I've bought a lot of much better harmonicas and got much better at playing them and I know how to tweak them and get them playing the way I want them to. I've played in bands and sessions now for over thirty years and I'm reasonably well regarded for my playing. I'm currently in a band in Bude which sings and plays all sorts, with an emphasis on shanties and other traditional songs. I can turn my hand to a lot of different styles but always in traditional music and never in that blues style!
