15 November 1806U.S. Army officer, Zebulon Pike and his exploratory team sighted and tried to climb to the summit of the mountain now usually known as Pikes Peak located in the Front Range of the American Rocky Mountains. Pikes Peak is commonly believed to have inspired the songwriter and poet Katharine Lee Bates to write “America the Beautiful” in 1893.
