Bloom iron worked is wrought iron, and black. Also, anyone working a bloomery is probably black considering the amount of charcoal and length of time required to heat to 2300° F. So, a combination of appearance and material? Tin, on the other hand, smelts at around 400° F. and white in appearance . (see Cornish flag).
