"The way you speak" can vary a lot to depending on where you are and the audience. A conversation with friends is different from a speech, a "working" voice or whatever. Likewise with singing. I can think of quite a few singers who perform songs with a voice not dissimilar to that with which they speak. Of course, not exactly. The phrasing will be slightly different and we don't use high and low notes in conversation.
