Understanding the lyrics of this song is quite an absorbing query, indeed. I can add that Cyril Tawney himself confirmed that the chicken and its raft are fried egg and a slice of dito bread: you can find his statement in his explanatory notes on the backside of the case of his 1972 vinyl LP 'In Port'. But I have another, nagging, question: where or what, for God's sake, or even who, is 'Donny B'? Nowhere do I find any comment on this, no geographical or other reference. Tawney himself doesn't explain it either. I wonder whether the answer is so all-evident that nobody gives it any attention... Is it something utterly British? I am just a Belgian, (a member of the Blankenberge Shanty-choir)... Who can help me out?
