13 December 1867 An attempt was made to rescue the imprisoned Fenian Ricard O’Sullivan Burke by blowing a hole in the wall of the Middlesex House of Detention, Clerkenwell London, killing 12 people and injuring 50. Michael Barrett was arrested for this and subsequently became the last man to be publicly hanged in England.
