GUEST,Gareth Gof Lyr Add: Welsh Mari Lwyd/Wassail Song (5) RE: Lyr Add: Welsh Mari Lwyd/Wassail Song 02 Jan 26

Wel dyma enw'r feinwen / Sy'n codi gyda seren
Well, this is the name of the maid / Who rises with the star (or "stars")
(This couplet repeated)
A hon yw'r washael fawr ei chlod / Sy'n caru bod yn llawen.
And this is the wassail of great praise / Which loves to be merry.
(This couplet repeated)
Dymunwn i'ch' lawenydd / I gynnal blwyddyn newydd
We wish for your happiness / To support (or "maintain") the new year
(x2)
Tra paro gwr yn dincian cloch / Well, well yn boch chwi beinydd.
As long as a man can tinkle a bell / Well, well, you'll be blushing (or perhaps "well fed/rosy cheeked") every day.
(x2)
(This verse suggests ongoing merriment and good cheer).
Ffarweliwch, foneddigion, / Ni gawsom croeso ddigon
Farewell, gentlefolk, / We received welcome enough (or "plenty of welcome")
(x2)
Bendith Duw fo ar eich tai / A phob rhyw rhai o'ch ddynion.
God's blessing be on your houses / And on every single one of your people.
(x2)
This song is often performed as part of the Mari Lwyd custom in South Wales, where a group carrying a horse figure goes from door to door, engaging in a singing contest (pwnco) with the household to gain entry and receive food and drink.
