GUEST,Timehiker Non-music Powhatan Indian lecture (4) Non-music:Powhatan lecture 25 May 01

Several months ago, I asked for suggestions from mudcatters about possible topics for a lecture that I have been asked to give at the small museum where I work. There was an enthusiastic response from several mudcatters, and for that, please accept my heartfelt thanks.

I'd like to inform all who are interested, that a date for the lecture has been set. It is at 2:00 PM, on Saturday, June 9th, 2001. If you are in the Richmond, Virginia area or will be passing by there on that weekend, consider yourself invited. You can get directions at our website, www.henricus.org. I believe there is a small fee and reservations are advised, but not required.

Just so you'll know, I took some of the advice offered, and broke the 30 minute presentation into 3 mini-lectures. I will talk about three Native people who had an impact on our settlement, Pocahontas, who lived at Henricus for a time after her capture, Oppossunoquonuske, the weroansqua, or female chief of a neighboring Appomattucks town, and Opecancanough, who orchestrated the military action that forced Henricus (and all the other Virginia settlements except Jamestown) to be abandoned in 1622.
