Actually Dennis King provides a neat overview of gaelic pronunciation...and contends that it follows very clear rules, they are just different from english pronunciation...see http://www.lincolnu.edu/~focal for more info... I think it has a lot to do with a separate gaelic alphabet that migrated over to the ABC alphabet based more on the letters appearance than sound...
