Oh, when I was a girl, Old Red was an egg
Through the henhouse and barnyard we'd roll
Just a girl and her egg, we were both full of fun
As a friend, Red was worth more than gold.
I remember the time before Easter one year
When Red would have "dyed" without doubt
Mom was prepared to dip Red in the pot
I jumped in and pulled Old Red out

As the days rolled along, Old Red he cracked out
A chick newly hatched from his shell
And as he emerged, and he looked in my eyes
I could see Red would be my best pal.
With wings that were trembling, Red struck up a pose
And strained his cute beak to the sky
Then he crowed a clear note, so loud and so pure

Old Red gave his call, and he woke one and all
