IanB, the only other suggestion I would make for just voice recording is a compressor. A compressor can be used to level out the volume range (i.e. boost quiet moments and cut loud moments). This will mitigate some of the problems you have with volume, distance from mic., etc. I think Alesis makes a fairly affordable one called the Nanocompressor, or borrow or maybe even rent..
