If you can get a hold of a copy of Jelly Roll Morton's taped interviews with Alan Lomax, I think you'll see where Redbone's persona came from. That swaggering posture, the pose of Southern royalty in JRM's voice is identical to Redbone's spoken style. Intonations, word selection, all point to Redbone's taking inspiration from this self-satisfied musical pioneer, who used this occasion to claim that he "invented" jazz. |
