GUEST,Steven G. Review: Stan Rogers - A Matter of Heart (20) Stan Rogers - A Matter of Heart 31 Jul 01

Hello, all

I would like to just post a message and comment on a play I recently seen at the Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada a few weeks ago. It is a new production called Stan Rogers - A Matter of Heart.

The play consist of songs that were wrote by Stan Rogers. His songs are staged in 1 act plays, because each song that Stan Rogers wrote, were like mini operas, talking about the everyday person trying there best to make do. From a farmer to fishers each song that Stan Rogers wrote talked about the everyday Canadian.

A little brief history of Stan Rogers. Stan Rogers was a singer-songwriter from Hamilton, Ontario. His parents were from the Maritimes (Nova Scotia), and any chance they could, they would go down to the Maritimes each summer, and visit relatives. So some of the songs that Stan Rogers wrote, were about the Maritimes and its way of life, like Make and Break Harbour, and Fogarty's Cove. Unfortunately Stan Rogers passed away in 1983 in a airplane fire. But his music lives on through this play. Back to my review on the play ;)

The play was totally amazing, the actors done an excellent job with the music, and expressing the people in the songs that Stan Rogers wrote. Each song that I heard, the actors put in alot of emotion in what they were singing. And there some songs that they sung, like Lies and Make and Break Harbour, sort had a tear in my eye because it was totally moving. But there was some songs that were quite funny, like Working Joe, and Half of A Heart, that made you laughed hard. But all and all, it was well worth the 30 dollars.

And speaking about the actors, the actors had a great band to back them up, they really did a great job of the songs, well arranged for the actors that were singing them. And with the band and actors singing those famous tunes, all I want to do is sing along with them. And when the audience gave a standing ovation when they sung the Mary Ellen Carter, it must of been a powerful feeling to the group of musicians and actors that worked so hard to bring Stan Rogers music to life.

To conclude I would like to say that it anyone is touring Canada, or any Canadians thinking of taking a trip down to the Maritimes. Gets a chance to come to Prince Edward Island, and stay in Charlottetown for a few days. Go to the Stan Rogers - A Matter of Heart play. It is well worth your money, and it is at the main stage at the Confederation Centre on Thursdays and Fridays at 8 p.m. til August 31st.

Thanks for your time,

Steven G.
