I agree that it's there on the first album, but don't forget the "Freewheelin'" album still shows some chops. Get a hold of some of the bootlegged early stuff, and the stuff where he is sitting in front of a tape recorder just singing/playing stuff "for Albert". Open-tuning, figerstyle, bluesy things like "Standing on a Highway"....mmmm, very tasty pickin'.
