LASSIE O' THE MORNIN'
(Jack Foley)

Aince I thought the daybreak sun was brighter than the een,
As it roused the glen and warmed the earth and nestled every gean,
But it faded in the warmth o brichtest sicht I've seen,
The bonnie bonnie lassie o' the morning
And the sparkle o' her laughter ever after I'll recall,
Like the linkin jinklin trinkin as the mountain burns fa'
But the hills are empty noo, the bonnie lassie she's awa
The bonnie bonnie lassie o' the morning

The border breeze was cool as mile for mile we baith gaed on
Reaching for thon high high lands wi secret nooks and loans
Where the rocks were worn and weathered by the freens we'd never known
Together wi the lassie o' the morning
Thro the clouds intae the sun we scrambled tae the cairn above
While the raven soared below us nocht but secret words we'd have
Then the hills threw oot their airms and gaithered us intae their love
And ma ain love for the lassie o the morning

Then doon the scree we skippit, trundling happy on the hill,
We'd fa' and laugh and see ourselves, as bairns once more we'd feel,
And we baith knew that we'd grasped a joy, which nane could share nor steal,
Together wi' my lassie o' the morning.
And a dyke across the burn we built, to try to stop it's race,
But we might as well hae tried tae haud, our wild love tae one place,
Then I saw a look o' the parting soon to come cloud o'er her face
O' my ain dear bonnie lassie o' the mornin

The weary wi' one last daft run, we jostled tae the inn,
Grippin, trippin, slippin, seein what we'd left ahint
Then a greatful gasp o' ale, thankful for the day just done,
And my ain thanks for the lassie o' the morning.
A' through the dusk we lingered wi' nae words for us to say,
Nae lang fareweel to break the spell, we'd both mind a' our days,
Just a trembling look, a kiss, a touch, we turned and walked away,
And now they'll never be another morning.

Bob Blair's CD notes give just the first two verses. This is the full song.
