Many of us here know we will have lost friends, colleagues and acquaintances when the final dreadful list is published. Some we know of already, others we will come to know, but even the strangers are in our thoughts and prayers.

If one man's death diminishes me, as Donne wrote, by how much are we all diminished by the WTC carnage? Or could it be that the solidarity of all decent folk in this time of trouble actually produces change for the better?
Were that to happen, they might not have died in vain.
