Back in the seventies, the then Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Liam Cosgrave addressed the United Nations and called on Israelis and Palestinians to settle their differences "in a proper Christian manner". His advisors pointed out the incongruity beforehand, suggesting it wouldn't go down too well with either party. He conceded that might have been true, but that it would go down very well with the voters of Dun Laoghaire (his home constituency). The rest of the world needs American presidents to rise above that sort of parochialism.
