This goofy song has a serious background: boys eight or ten years old worked in mines driving coal wagons pulled on tracks by mules:

MY SWEETHEART'S A MULE IN THE MINE

My sweetheart's a mule in the mine; I drive her without any line. In the wagon I sit And I chew and I spit All over my sweetheart's behind.

The tune as I learned it is the same as "Popeye the Sailor Man." Anybody know if there is any more to the song?
