If it was tar I'd recommend Lard (bacon fat) it works a treat rub it in (usually on yer hands) wash off with washing-up liquid. Not tried it on tape residues, and on guitars any thing that dissolves the residues would soak-in to any bare wood.
at least it isn't a banjo skin.
