Also, Art Thieme's first post reminded me of a great book I'm reading called "A Space on the Side of the Road: Cultural Poetics in an 'Other' America", by Kathleen Stewart. It's an admittedly academic book, but it's set in the Southwest West Virginia coal-mining region and gives some really good looks at ways of life that resist assimilation into the mainstream American capitalist machinery.
