23 December is Tom Bawcock's Eve; no-one seems to know who he was but the night is celebrated in Mousehole in Cornwall, where they serve the far-from-vegetarian "Starry Gazey Pie" which contains seven different types of fish, the heads of all of whom poke up through the pie-crust to gaze at the stars - not usually a rewarding pastime if a Mousehole winter is as I remember. There is a song - fairly widely-known, which even details the species of fish - more like a census than a menu.
