Actually, the Father-In-Law is a racist in the Racist sense. The fact that the man retired to Florida seems to me to be immaterial. Those kinds of attitudes are not developed by a recent relocation, but by long-term exposure to an environment that fosters such nonsense. The most overt, biggoted racist I ever encounterd was my uncle. Born, raised and spent his entire life in eastern Pennsylvania. The circumstance stinks either way, and it's regrettable that you had to sit through it.
On the other hand I know some real Florida Cracker Cowmen who are among the most open minded, racially tolerant folks I've ever met.
