Don't know if any of you can help, but if you can I’d be grateful...
I've just finished re-reading Master & Commander by Patrick O'Brian, and in it (in chapter 12) the main character, Jack Aubrey, sings 2 verses from songs...
What I’m wondering is if they are in fact parts of real songs, or if they were made up by the author.
The first is about the Battle of the Nile, and the lyrics given are:
We anchored alongside of them like lions bold free.
When their masts and shrouds come tumbling down, what a glorious sight to see!
Then came the bold Leander, that noble fifty-four,
And on the bows of the Franklin she caused her guns to roar;
Gave her a dreadful drubbing, boys, and did severely maul;
Which cause them loud for quarter cry and down French colours haul.
The second is just noted as 'another favourite naval song' and the lyrics given are:
There happened of late a terrible fray,
Begun upon our St James's day,
With a thump, thump, thump, thump, thump,
Thump, thump a thump, thump.
Any help would be appreciated
Cheers
