Thanks for all the advice everyone. You're all really helpful. I self taught myself guitar, back when I was 14, cos I wanted to play music like Nivarna and Metallica...how impressionable I was. I fell down on it though. When it came to GCSE's I concentrated souly on my trumpet as that was what I had been taught since the age of 10. 2 hrs practice a day. God I hated it. But as they say practice makes perfect, and I don't regret it one bit. I dropped it when I went to uni cos there was nowhere to play and started with folk music. Now I play both and realise what I've missed out on those couple of years. I practice all my instruments every day...and I don't hate it cos I know you need to. I actually enjoy it now. The only thing I don't play anymore is the guitar. I forgot the chords. I'll treat him to a new set of strings and a guitar book. VERY early birthday pressie I guess. He really want's to learn, and I understand the compostion of chords and all the other stuff. I just can't remember the blasted things!! Maybe I'll buy him a couple of lessons with Ian Stephenson for his birthday if it looks like he's going to stick at it. I'll also check out all those sites and print him some stuff off. I can then teach him how to read music and tab. I know it's good to play bt ear, but you can't just strum chords all your life I guess. So he HAS to learn to read the stuff. I won't let him have any choice in the matter. I used to teach trumpet....and I CAN be an evil music teacher if I wanna be!! lol!!
