Steve, the bridge doesn't need to be on to tighten the head until the very last stages. Basically the head should be tight enough (particularly for Scruggs style banjo)so that the bridge doesn't deform the top significantly when the strings are at pitch. Measure the distance from the nut to the 12th fret...the bridge should be at the same distance from the 12th fret as the nut is. Safest to loosen both coordinator rods a bit to get the tension hoop on. Good luck. |
