GUEST,dorrie Attracting young folks to folk music (43) RE: Attracting young folks to folk music 23 Mar 02

my home computers broken so i'm on my laptop.

everytime i see a thread like is one i want to get quite annoyed because alot of "teenagers" feel unwelcome in the land of arran sweaters-NOT ME! But the folk world can be daunting and one big private joke to the outside world.

i've been attending folk events since was born (i was actually due to be born at one-mum had me early so she could still go) and i have made many many friends over the years i met my best friend at whitby many years ago. As Jezebel said people like the pack and 422 carry on the tradition and have a laugh with it. But i've heard people say i dont like the way they dont take it seriously etc (thats only a few people but still!).

To attract young people we would probably have to become trendy which is a scary thought that once something is trendy it goes out of fashion and uncool only to become 'retro'.

I give my friends tapes of folk artists i like and they buy the album tape it for a friend-basically what i'm saying if that with enough word of mouth folk will conquer the world. It is an arual(oral!?!) tradtion after all.

Folk music is in my blood and even though sometimes i want too i cant get away from it. I cant sing in any other style i just sound silly!

sorry i got quite carried away there

d xx

p.s a moshpit is a big load of smelly people dancing violently apparently if you dont come out with brusies you cant have had a good time!! Usually dancing to punk/ska/metal/rock/nu-metal music!
